How To Make Sugared Cranberries
Beautiful, and simple, sugared cranberries are an easy way to dress up any holiday cocktail, dessert, or serving platter. It only takes 2 simple ingredients to make these bright red berries have a whimsical snowy appearance!
We spend all this time driving ourselves crazy getting ready to throw a holiday party, when all we really need is a cocktail, some music, fun people, and we are set. Throw in a few ugly sweaters, and it is a holiday party! It is really fun to have a signature cocktail at a party. It adds a festive touch, and makes for a talking point for people as well. Everyone makes their way to the bar at some point that night, so we might as well make it memorable. These sugared cranberries are very easy to make ahead of time, skewer, and decorate drinks with.
I made these sugared cranberries over the Thanksgiving holiday when we had some extra cranberries around, and my 2 year old son was eating them like candy! I think he liked the crunch, along with the tart center, and (of course) the sweetness.
I actually tested these a couple different ways. First, I dipped the cranberries in egg whites, and then rolled them in sugar. This way actually does work if you are looking to simply display the cranberries, but if you are looking to eat them, I recommend using a simple syrup. By coating the cranberries in a simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water), it allows the sugar to coat the cranberries, while also keeping them edible.
Tips for How To Make Sugared Cranberries
*There is no need to overcook the simple syrup. Once the sugar has dissolved, allow the syrup to cool slightly before adding it to the cranberries.
*Let the cranberries sit in the simple syrup overnight. This is important! If you skip this step, the cranberries will not be evenly coated, and the sugar will not adhere to the berries.
*When adding the cranberries to the shallow pan, or bowl, filled with sugar to coat, it helps to move the pan around continuously to prevent clumps. Once the cranberries are added, use a slotted spoon to toss them around.
*Place the cranberries onto a wire rack to dry.
