While most Mackinac Island businesses close following the busy summer season at the end of October, Original Murdick’s Fudge will re-open its historic Main Street fudge shop December 1-17 to make Pure Michigan holiday confections, including the newest addition to the fudge flavor roster – Holiday Cranberry.

Original Murdick’s Fudge, Mackinac Island’s original fudge shop that began in 1887, will create six gift box selections filled with fresh fudge, crunchy brittles, buttery caramel corn and mouthwatering toffees. These handcrafted, all-natural and gluten-free treats are made from the Mackinac Island Murdick family's original 1887 recipes.

“We’re excited to be back on Mackinac Island to make fresh fudge for just 17 days. Only a handful of places are open on the island during this time of year so this is a very special occasion for us – and for many year-round island residents – as we fire up our fudge kitchens right after Thanksgiving,” said Bob Benser, Jr. owner of Original Murdick’s Fudge.

“We have been asked many times over the years by our customers to ship freshly made fudge during the holidays. So for the third year in a row, we decided to do just that,” Benser said.

MAKE IT MERRY: Six holiday gift-box options can include not only a choice of Original Murdick’s 12 Mackinac Island fudge flavors, but also three varieties of peanut brittle, caramel corn, and English toffee. All sweets are made with only the freshest, all-natural ingredients, most from Michigan, including the sugar, butter, cream and maple sugar.

Each batch of Original Murdick’s fudge starts in a copper kettle and is artfully created with attention to indoor, outdoor and marble countertop temperatures, and length of time/temperature required for cooking, boiling, stirring, cooling and shaping. The art of fudge making at Murdick’s also requires skilled fudge makers to perform a specific and timely “paddling” technique when shaping the delectable fudge into loaves.
